Ttgypt—Said Pasha Has Issued A Circular ...
ttgypt—Said Pasha has issued a circular relative to the cuXm-houses in the interior , which has done away Sth a very unjust second duty formerly levied on SportatiomT after they had paid the regular tax of five w £ nt . adoalorem , and on exported merchand , se over Sd above the first payment of twelve per cent In the Scalar now published by the Viceroy it is decided that M goods coming from Darfour and the White Nile , which are considered as countries independent of Egspt , roast , when imported into Egypt , pay the duty of five ner cent , and , if intended for exportation , pay only the transit duty of three per cent . ; and all goods imported from provinces beyond Asouan , which are under the Egyptian Government , will pay no duty at Asouan , and wfll be assimilated to the produce of Egypt , which is exempt from all duty so long as it is not exported . An Honest Cabman . —A . cab was hired a few days ago to convey to Messrs . TVining ' s banking-house a large quantity of coin from the Bank of England . After driving off , the cabman found a bag of gold remaining in hi » vehicle ; this he took to the banking-house , and gave it up to the owners . It -was found to contain loOl . The driver received 20 ? . as a reward for his honesty . _ The Descendant of Defoe . —Mr . Charles Knight contributes to the Times the following interesting particulars concerning James Defoe : — " In January , 1854 , an old man called upon me at my office and requested me to look at a book which he held in his hand . Jt was the third volume of the Life of Daniel Defoe , by Walter Wilson . He pointed to the account of the decendants of Defoe , by which it appeared that Samuel , his grandson , had a son James , who , says "Wilson , ' is living at this time ( 1830 ) , a boxmakerand undertaker , in Hungerfordmarket , London . He has had a family of eight children , of whom two are now living , James and Priscilla . ' The old man who addressed me was this great-grandson of Daniel Defoe . He was then seventy-seven years of age . I could not 1 e otherwise than interested in the remarkable fact that a dirjet lineal male descendant of the great novelist and politician—one of England ' s immortalswas alive . I took his address ; visited him in his humble cottage at Kennington ; ascertained that he had removed from Hungerford-market at the time it was pulled down , had since been unfortunate in business , and was now chiefly dependent upon his wife and daughter , who lived with him , and took in washing . I established his identity with the boxmaker by his old account-books , and I learnt from some of his former neighbours of Hungerford-market that he was greatly respected as an honest and industrious man who had seen better days . I need not say that these circumstances deeply moved " my sympathy" I communicated the matter to some private friends , from whom I obtained subscriptions ; and I have since received two annual subscriptions , of 10 / . each , from a lady whose munificent charities are well known . During 1854 and the present year I have thus been able to make a periodical payment to this interesting old man , and I have procured him medical assistance during a severe illness . My little fund is now nearly exhausted . The annual subscription of 10 ? . will , however , be continued . " Mr . Knight adds that the reason why he did not make the case public was that , on consulting with his friend Mr . Dickens , be thought that an open appeal would not produce any more favourable results tnan those which had already been attained . " The interest , " concludes Mr . Knight , " which I felt for James Dofoe as the descendant of a great man has been increased during my intercourse with him by his own simple anJ manly character . " A Fn . EE LiIHRAKV AND MUSEUM REFUSED IN the City . —A large meeting of ratepayers of the City of London was held in the Egyptian-hall of the Munsion-house , on Monday , to take into consideration the propriety of establishing a free Library and Museum in London , in accordance with the Public Libraries and Museums' Act of last session . Tho Mayor addressed the meeting in favour of applying the act ; but Mr . Deputy Peacock moved tho previous question , on the ground that the City had already got a free library of " 12 , 000 volumes at Guildhall . " And how often , " asked the Deputy , " did they think that library wns used by the citizens ? During the month of October , the library w us visited by se \ 'en persons ! " At which there wore cheers and laughter . Mr . Peacock also alluded to the pressure on tho rates ; and finally , on a show of hands , " the previous question" was carried by an immense majority . Fatal Accident . —Mr . Joseph Suillcr , of the firm of Sudler and Hunison , wine merchants , of London , was wulking on tho pier nt Boulogne , when hie foot tripped against some projection , and ho fell into the harbour , a depth of thirty feet . He was picked up out of tlie mud , tho tide being out at the time ; but the spine was broken , and he shortly after expired .

Money Market And City Intelligence. Frid...
MONEY MARKET AND CITY INTELLIGENCE . Friday Evening , November 9 , 1855 . All the -week Consols have been steady , and but slight fluctuations ; but the settling of the monthly account has shown that Stock was scarce , and ha ? made the market go better . This morning the rumour of an alliance offensive and defensive with Sweden has given a life-like appearance to the Funds , and they have been done at 89 . Will an alliance with Sweden improve our funds eventualy ? is the question . Would not the enforced restitution of Finland form a fifth point , and thereby prolong the war ? The American difficulty has not surged up this week , — is that spectre laid , or 5 s it to re-appear ? Meanwhile there is a little cloud in the distance that will bur » t soon after Parliament re-assembles in the form of a new loan , I ' eoole are divided as to the amount—some exaggerators say fortv millions . Sardinia and Turkey will want money , and we have not been carrying on a war in the slashing , off-hand manner , ' more Polmerstoni" for nothing . Wo hear of 200 fresh 13-inch mortars , and 130 , 000 shells to match , being sent out , and we forgot the co .-t . As soon as Parliament assembles we shall be enlightened in this and other particulars . Now money is easier , Bank returns bettor , < fcc , « fcc , and a half-yearly dividend in ' the Funds , due in six weeks ' time . Barring bad news ftv . m the United States , we shall see the Funds 91 or 92 before " rhe'ftailway Market has been more buoyant , and prices better sustained . The same has been observed in tho foreign lines . Canada Land has been firmer . . Joint-stock banks all good . —Mines , that is , Foreign Mines , aro dull : but investments in good English Mines are , and have been , enormous . The advanced price of metals has been the principal cause of this tendency to buy Mining Shares . United Mexicans have experienced a rise and fall of from 10 s . to los . a share . Crystal Palaces are still heavy , and the dealers evidently aI 1 In tluj Foreign Market for Securities Turkish Six per Cents , the New Four per Cents , are very steady .
