valance , and tricks of air kinds . If . I call him a German version of Davenport , or something ^ fce whfttWallack is in tragedy , I shall tolerably convey my impression . The great defects are a yfauit of impulse , a want of light and . shade , and a want of self 4 dentificatiQ& ^ jth the passion of the part : heisalways an actor , and yon see him acting ! Thus , in that exq uisite lore scene , where Egmont comes in his splendour to gratify C / am ' s feminine love ofdisplay—that scene which Scott appropriated in JCeniUoqrfy '' "W $ h-. ' , $ cqojness not surpassed by ; Dumas himself—Herr pevrient , ihstead ' of representing the p layful tenderness and affectionate sympathy of a great man yielding to his mistress , and enjoying her girlish admiration , looked far more like aiuvenile tragedian entering the greenroom and asking the soubrette , " BjDvr do yqu like my make up ? " Why ,
such a scene as that should hare something of the gentle strength and compassionate lorihgness painted on the face of Millais' Hyr / iiengt soldier—a , sympathy with the feelings of his mistress , such as the oak must feel for the tendrils that enclasp it . But Herr Devrient admired himself almost as much as she . did ! "life yoUa I wha > do yqif think of me now P " Then , agaih , the lore making of that love scene ! © id Herr Bevrient ever look lovingly into the depths of loving eyes , or sit hand-clasped beside one whose life leaped to meet his ^ that he can present us with such a picture of . a hero ' s love ? His face—which . has but two expressionstold nothing of what might have been passing in JEgmonfs breast ; his tones revealed nothing , his gestures nothing : Groethe had given him wordsto titter , and he uttered them— -that , is all . You observe , I measure Herr Pevrient by the standard of his own
pretensions , riot by the standard of contemporary acting . Place him beside ph ^ rl ^ s ^ ean , or Anderson , for example ) and severity passes into admiration . What he may do with other characters remains to bp seen ; but from last night I have seen enough to assure me that a great actor he neither is npr will be . Clara wasplayed by Frati Stolte , a pretty-eyed , ingenuous woman , whom I ghjqnild like to see in coinedy , Her Clara was natural ; but , as I often say ? according to whose nature ? Is Clara a genial loving gjrl of hunible yfe / proua with a fine gentleman ? Then notiring could well be more charming . But Egmont did not make a baiter ^ nadchen his mistress . tinder all the naivete" and ignorance of
Clarathere -is . ja . reined ppetic nature : and this is the nature according to whichthfe actress should be natural ! Of the others , I will prily me ^ ntiqri Hemi Birristill and Denk , whose grotesqiieness seemed $ p prpmise tjiat if Mr . Mitchell would give us Grerman comedies , instead of tragedies , there might be something more than gratified curiosity , and , " German without a master "—there , might be amusement !

OMNIANA . I can only record in a line the immense success of Wigan's benefit , at which I was not able to be present , the Grerman plays having a prior claim . Wigan is a great favourite , and his loss will be a terrible loss to the Princess ' s . Ceemorne Gardens have opened for the season ( what a season ! how appropriate to alfresco delights I ) , and I will discourse thereon with con- ; siderable eloquence on a future occasion : at present my eloquence is restricted to a record of the fact . MR . H . C . SELOTJS'S PICTURE OF THE INAUGURATION OP THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851 . Mb . Selous exhibits , at DSTo . 4 , Trafalgar-place , a very interesting and effective memorial of that May-Day of which our century may never see the parallel . The picture is arranged with considerable scenic effect : a good idea of the Crystal Palace , within a limited view , is ob-r tained . The portraits of the distinguished company gathered round the royal dais—the court , diplomacy , commissioners , etc . —are tolerably faitliral , but not lihevtesse ? . Henry Cole , for instance , we should recognise ; and Owen Jones : but the latter has not the dark hair bestowed upon him by the artist . Then again , the Prince Albert of Mr . Selous is too tall for the original ; and Lord Derby too slender : the latter looks more like a lean author than the clean cut aristocratic English gentleman whose type is familiar to the Park . - Perhaps we might hare expected Mr . Selous to throw into the ; cpmposition of his subject a little less of the stuck look portrait groups are apt to have : but on the whole the effect is satisfactory , and the demands for the engraving seem to be commensurate with the interest I attaching to the occasion it commemorates .
