POLTIMORE COPPER AND GOLD MINING Compang .. Adjourned First Half-Yearly General Meeting ; of Registered Shareholders held at the Offices of the Company , Vernon House , No . 50 , Pall Mall , on Thursday , May 5 , 1853 , Chahles Heneage , Esq ., in the Chair . The Circular convening the Meeting having been read , the following Report was laid before the Shareholders : — REPORT . In meeting the Shareholders for the first time , the Committee have much pleasure in being able to report most satisfactorily as to the position and prospects of the undertaking . It will be remembered that the Company was formed for the production of Copper mainly , but as the gossan of the locality nad been proved to be auriferous , and as immense deposits existed on the Poltimore sett , a yield from this source was made an anticipated adjunct . There is now before the public a fair estimate of the average productiveness of this gossan—not from picked specimens or exceptional p ieces—but from numerous experiments taken from the g eneral mass which had no auriferous signs . These experiments admit of no further doubt as to the presence of Gold , and that in sufficient quantities to render it highly remunerative . The reduction in bulk has exceeded expectation . The Cake of Gold which is on the table weighs 2 (* k ounces , and was extracted from 20 tons of red The Circular which was sent to the Sh areholders on the 16 th of last month , a transcript of which is added to this Report , contains the particulars of the reduction ; but it is necessary to mention here , that the red gossan , which proves an average yield of 1 oz . 7 dwts . per ton , is apparently an inexhaustible deposit , while the brown , from which 6 dwts . of Gold were extracted , besides Silver and Copper , can be traced across the entire sett . There would , consequently , be no difficulty in bringing to surface the 300 tons per week proposed to be taken by Messrs . Rawlin . 8 and Watson at £ 4 4 s . per ton , or double this quantity ; so that much more than the large profits in favour of the Company mentioned by those gentlemen , may be calculated upon . „ A question , however , of much interest here presents itselt tor the consideration of the Shareholders , — namely , whether it would not be advisable to erect reduction works on the premises , under the superintendence of Messrs . Rawlins and Watson , or others ; but , in the meantime , the Committee have taken the necessary steps foT a continuous supply of the red gossan to St . Helen ' s . A strong reason in favour of reduction works at the mine is the fact , that the brown gossan , which could give but a small profit by transmission to Messrs . Rawlms and Watson , would return a considerable profit if reduced on the Mine . The Britannia Mining Company , whose sett adjoins the Poltimore Mine , have contracted for the erection of works for crushing and amalgamating their auriferous gossan , under the direction of Captain W . J . Moorsom and Mr . Mitchell . As respects the production of Copper , all points likewise progress with energy and efficiency . The necessary machinery is on the ground , the wheel is nearly finished , and in about a fortnight it is anticipated the full power will be in motion to clear the shafts and levels of water . In reference to the old works generally , it is no exaggeration to say they are gigantic , and the natural inference to be drawn is , that they were not carried on without beneficial returns ; but whether it was for Copper or for Gold , or both , which the ancients explored , there is not the slightest clue to determine . There is not even tradition bb to the period when these extensive operations were carried on , but there is every indication of their being the labour of Romans . Slag is found in different parts of the locality , but nothing can be extracted from it to show whether tho reduction was for the precious or the baser TY 1 f ^ t flA fl There are 4 engine-shafts sunk to the depths of 20 and 40 fathoms ; 9 whim-shafts from the surface ground to the aditlevels , about 30 to 40 fathoms deep : 300 fathoms in tho eastern , and 200 fathoms in tho western , side of the valley have been removed in tho adit-level from tho gossan lode , m some places in chambers of great dimensions . The Copper , or Bamfyldo lode , has likewise been sunk and driven on . All these different points will be explored and carefully examined so soon as tho mine is clear of water . The leats , lobbies , and archings have also boon executed in a manner evidently regardless of cost or labour , and the Poltimore Mine altogether presents an area of vast -operations and interest . It is probably one of the largest undertakings in tho kingdom . Its extent and capabilities , in fact , can only he fully understood by personal inspection , and all who visit it will return satisfied of the mineral resources of tho property . An accountant lias investigated the accounts of the Company , and handed in a certified balance-sheet , which shown that tho number of Shares paid up , inclusive of those appropriated to tho Lessees in purobnBO of tho sett , was 41 , 720 , leaving a balance of 8280 Shareti , which tho Committee recommend should be offered to tho public at CH per Hharo , Riving tho present Shareholders a priority at that prioo . All the charges to date have boon disbursed , with tho exception of some for tho machinery , &o ., now in course of erection , not exceeding £ 500 ; and the balance to the credit of tho Company at tho Bankers' is £ 19 , 754 17 s . 5 d . Considering tho strong probability of early profits from tho resources of the Mine , the Committee propose to tho Hharoholdern to cancel the 2 nd of tho Rules and Regulations , which provided for tho payment of dividend *! from capital , until tho Mino shall bo productive , and that tho next mooting should bo declared special for that purpose , in pursuance of Iiule 20 th . Proposed by the Chairman , HOcondod by William Foil , Esq ., and Resolved , — That tho Report now road be received , and entered in tho Cost-hook . Proposed by Charlon Clarkfl Duppa , Esq ., Hocondod by Francw Bill , lisq ., and Resolved , — That tho licnt UiimkH of thin mooting nro given to tho Chairman and Committee of Management for tho oflloimit ' munnor in which tho affairs of the Company have boon conducted . MONEY MARKET AND CITY INTELLIGENCE . Friday Evening , May 6 , 1853 . Business has not been very active during the past week . Con . sols have been bought by the Government broker , and remain firm In Spanish Securities there has been a faU particularly in that most fluctuating of all stock—the Committee's Certificates—SKave sustained a reverse . In Mexicans there has been hardly any change . In the Railway Markets Irish lines still take thl lPad—the Dublin Exhibition has produced a greater traffic on tie variou l ^ nes In the English Railway Market the advance has been in Great Northerns , Lancashire and Yorkshire , Midlands and Eastern Counties , but the speculation has not been so creat as anticipated . The ministerial majority last week does not appear to confirm the timid or irresolute French Railways have commanded much attention this week . Strasburgs still occupy the first place in proportion to the others , but the fusion between Eouens and Havre , Paris and Havre , and the Cherbourg Companies , should improve the prices of all these lines , boutn Eastern of France , from Lyons to Geneva , still languid ; there seems to be still some hitch about the famous concession . In the Land Companies and Gold Mining shares , but very little has been doing , and sales have been the order of the day . Cahfornian , despite of a slight depression , are assuming the appearance of bond fide investments . The Quartz crushing experiments of the Agua Vria Company have been attended with great success , and most important results may consequently be looked for . Money was said to be scarce yesterday and the day before , and the export of gold to Australia , and the Continent may influence the money market to some degree .
