MUTUAL LIFE ASSURANCE . THE SCOTTISH PROVIDENT INSTITUTION . Instituted 1837 . —Incorporated 1848 . ' Head Ofjice . —14 , St . Andrew-square , Edinburgh . London Branch :. 66 , Gracechurch-street , corner of Fenchurch-street . Tho TWENTIETH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING was held on the 17 th of February , Alexander Keith Johnston , Esti-, Geographer to the Queen , in tho Chair . The Chaibmaw , aftor noticing different points of interest , closed his remarks thus -. —Being about to retire from the direction , after ten years' acquaintance , at different periods , with its duties , I am desirous to record my conviction , that , whatever be the merits of other Associations , no one can be conducted with greater prudence and zeal , or with a moro enlightened regard to the interest of its members , than the Scottish Provident Institution ; and at a time when competition in this branch of business has been carried to so ruinous an extent that in the course of last year alone not fewer than thirty unsuccessful establishments liave been closed or amalgamated with others of longer standing , it is a privilege as well as a duty to direct atteution to one which , adapting itself in its principles , as well as in its management , to the requirements of the age , combines the energy and activity of the more youthful with the safety and stability of the older institutions of our country . Mr . GEAHiM Binnt , W . S-, in the course of his remarks as Convener of Committee , in bringing up the Directors ' Report , said : —During the last five years in which I have had the honour of a seat in the direction , I have been a Member of tbeLoau or Investment Committee , and while I am thus enabled to speak with full knowledge on the subject , I can most conscientiously assure you that greater caution could not have been shown , nor more earnest consideration given to all the circumstances of every case brought before us by the Manager , had we been dealing with our own private funds . And while on this subject , allow me further to state , that , at the request of the Directors , I lately gave my professional assistance in ^ oing over , with Mr . Morton , our Solicitor , the whole subsisting securities of the Institution , —not contenting ourselves with merely perusing the account given of these securities in the "Loan Register" ( though that is a book kept with the greatest precision ) , but carefully examining the documents themselves ; and I am happy to say , and it w ill no doubt be inter esting to you to know , that the result of the examination was in the highest degree satisfactory . The sums invested on—1 . Heritable Bonds and in property , amount to £ 361 , 634 2 . On Debentures and Trust Funds 82 , 105 3 . On Value of our own Policies 33 , 016 Masking . £ 476 , 755 The rest of our Capital is made up of loans on personal securities combined with policies , and of premiums of insurance current at the close of the annual account . So that , on the whole , I think we may very safely comfort ourselves with the reflection that it will be all right with those who come after us , against the time when their rights under our policies come into play . The Report stated that in the course of the year there had been opened 616 new Policies , assuring 294 , 5612 . ; the yearly Premiums on which were AS ) 72 . 16 s . 2 d ., with 71002 . 10 s . 2 d . further received in single payments . The claims by death , seventy-five in number , amounted to 40 . 600 Z-, being little above the sum in the previous years , and less than that in 1855 . The gross amount of Premiums received in 1857 was 92 , 8582 . ; and , including Interest on the Accumulated Fund , the receipts of the year amounted to 111 , 9552 . The Realized Fund , arising from Accumulated Premiums , was , at 31 st December last , 513 , 1672 ., being an increase of above 67 , 0002 . in the year . The following is a View of the progress of the Society , arranged in four quinquennial periods i—In Five Years , Number of Accumulated ' ending Now Assuring . Fund at end of Slst December . Alexander Moneo , Town Clerk of Glasgow , seconded by Mr . Mblviic , Farmer , Bonuington , Katho , moved the approval of tho Report . The Rev . Dr . Jutitra Wood moved the cordial thanks of the Meeting to tho Directors ; and , in doing so , took occasion to impress on tho uninsured portion orthe community the duty of tlmeously making- a provision for those dependent on them , autf particularly the advantage of doing so in . early life , when it can be done at so vory small a cost . The Scottish Providbnt Institution is the only Office in which the advantages of Mutual Assurance can be obtained at Modcrato Premiums , Tho Ansured aro at the same time specially exempt from personal liability .
