vitchings ; and to sit and wait for tunes that never come , is to run the risk " catching the new * disease which we propose to entitle St . VeTdi ' s dance . Why [ dlle- Piccolomini should have selected Luisa Miller for her benefit , we cannot mceive ; she does not shine in the singing of the airs to which the best singing innot lend a charm , though her acting of the poor peasant girl , victim of a lughty father , a hasty lover , and a treacherous rival , is marked with strong ramatic instinct ; it is , after all , so far as the heroine is individually concerned , lly a poisoned version of the malediction sce ne in Lucia di Lammermoor ^ and of lelast situation in the Traviata , The scene in which the lovers , on a fatal lisconception , accompli&h a mutual apotheosis by the " milky way , " is certainly strong one , and we are surprised that Signor Vekdi , with Ins habitual predis-3 sition to violent effects , should display so imperfect a sympathy with the miantic impetuosity of the Germnn drama . The opera is performed far better tan it deserves to be at Her Majesty's Theatre , and it is worth noting that le only effective pieces in the performance are those which do not belong to , but are interpolations from other operas by the same composer , sucii as the : ena , ineffective enough in itself , but sung with absolute perfection by Madame lbo-ni . Signor Giuglini expended the whole force of his fine voice upon the iost bald and thankless vocal materials , and his sole success was in an interalated air . Signor Bbnevektano as the virtuous and indignant father , ho at one moment s « ems to be lapsing into a . pere coupable , sang with rddigious vehemence , and staggered about ( in his assumption of old age ) like sea-sick elephant ; but , on the whole , we fear he was not affecting . Signor iji-etti , as the haughty Count Walter , did all that could be done for the part , nd made it as decidedly effective as it could be made . Had we not known the
story , we should have fancied that the gentleman who undertook the part of Wurm , waa impersonating Conscience , so still and small was his voice . We cannot predict a long career for Luisa Miller in this country . Lucrezia Borgia is announced for Thursday next , with Mdlle . Titijens as Lucrezia , and Sigor Gxuguni as Gennaro . :

MR . TOM TAYLOR'S NEW COMEDY , Going to the Bad , is the singular name of Mr . Tom Taylor's new comedy produced at the Olympic on Monday night . The drama turns on the fortunes of a good-natured man ( played by Mr . Robson ) , who is Induced by some worldly-minded friends to assume a cynicism when he has it notj and who is finally brought back again to his belief in kindness . Mr . Taylor is an experienced writer for the stage , and he has , produced another amusing piece to add to his former successes . Moreover , it is excellently acted ; for the author has the happy art of taking an exact measure ^ of the capacity of his actors . The drama , however , has little to do -with art in any deep sense of the word . It is a very clever sketch of real life—of those trivial contemporary personages who make ' up the common web and woof of our existence . Audiences are pleased with such dramas because they understand and recognize them ; and , in this particular instance , the dialogue is really clever , easy , and natural , "without being too epigrammatic for ordinary play-goers . The moral that sympathy " pays" better than cynicism is , however , hardly made out . But the audience have crowned Mr . TATcxoii ' slast effort with their approval , and further criticism would be superfluous .
