stood clothed in the glory of God , like a bridegroom who leaves his chamber in the morn - ing ; like a warrior , rejoicing in his course . A wreath of all
colours encircled his head ; the earth triumphed , its herbs sent forth odours , its flowers adorned themselves . The other light stood , envious ,
and saw that it could not surpass this glory . " Why are there two sovereigns on one throne , " said she ? " Why am I the second , and not the first ?"
And suddenly , driven away by inward grief , her ^ beauteous light vanished . It fled far away in the heavens , and became the host of stars . And Luna stood ashamed before
the heavenly beings , pale as a lifeless body ; she wept aloud , ' * Have mercy on me , Father of the jam verse ! have mercy on me . " And the angel of the Lord stood before the eclipsed moon , and spake to her the words of holy
destiny . " Because thou hast envied the light of the sun , thou shalt henceforth borrow thy light from him ; and when yonder earth steps between you , thou shalt remain in part , or altogether , eclipsed as now /'
< c But weep not , child of error , thy Maker has forgiven thee thy offence , and changed thy punishment into a blessing . c Go to the penitent / said he , ' and tell her , that she , in her glory , shall be mistress of the night , and queen of the stars . 1 will turn the tears of
her repentance into balsam , which shall quicken the thirsty , and animate those with new strength , whom the beam of the sun has enfeebled . ' * "

Luna , consoled , turned away from the angel of the Lord ; and behold that mild splendour surrounded her , with which she still shines ; and she began the silent course she still fallows . Weeping her offence , she seeketh those she may refresh ; she seeketh those she may comfort . Daughter of beauty \ beware of envy . Envy drove angels from heaven ; envy obscured the
beautiful moon , benign mistress of the night . 3 . The Child of Mercy . As the Almighty was about to create mankind , he assembled in council the angels of his attributes , the highest guardians of his empire , around his secret throne . " Do not create him , " said the angel of Justice , he will act unjustly towards his brethren , unmercifully and cruelly towards the weak . "
" Do not create him , " said the angel of Peace ; lc he will moisten the earth , with human blood ; the first born of his race will slay his brother . " il
He will defile thy sanctuary with lies , " continued the angel of Truth s c ' though tbou shouldst set on his forehead , thy own image , the seal of veracity /'
Thus spsike the angels of the attributes of Jehovah , when Mercy , the youngest and most beloved child ofthe eternal Father , approached his throne and embraced his knee , " Form him , Father / ' said she , " in thy image , the favourite of thy mercy and goodness .
