sonable to conceive that the human eye was formed without design than a telescope ? And if there bo no intelligence in the cause or causes which produced human bein-gs , whence the hitman intellect ? Can the effect be superior to the catise ? Can any thiilg give what it has not ? I
know tliis is affirmed by the author of " The System of Nature ; * and he instances in wine , which he asserts will give wit ,, though it has none in itself . But had he tried its effect on an , ideot , is it likefy that it would have ^ produced genuine wit ? This instance ^ therefore , is very ritttje to the purpose ; for wine will not give wit though by exciting hilarity and
cheerfulness it may swiretimes cause Jt to be displayed . —Are not Ortho ^ doxy , Deism , and Atheism , then attended with difficulties , as weH as Unitarianism ? Why then is the latter selected as the most unreasonable of all ? Let its principles be fairly examined ; let its evidences be impartially scrutinized ,
and its advocates need neither fear the result , nor dreud a comparison between their own system , and any other whatever . \ " A Churchman" allows Unitarians u to be respectable men , to be sincere Christians , as honest arid in some things as wise as other Christians . " We thank him far allowing us honesty and sincerity .

We know we have no reason f $ boast of our wisdom , rior have we received much accession of light from his luminous instructions . Perhaps our darkness is so grass that no ray of light can penetrate it . Yet we hope not , because *** in some things" we are ** as wise as other Christians / ' By
incessant inquiry and unremitted endeavours to obtain information we may possibly in time , become " as wise' * as " A Churchman " himself . At present it seems , we are not sufficiently prepared by
freedom from prejudice , by enw larged and comprehensive views of things , to be convinced by his arguments . We nmst therefore , at least for ~ sbfne time , continue as we are . But <* A Churchman " is doubtless too much of a
philosopher , to imagine that vre are dissatisfied with oufr snrall share of knowledge and capacity . It is rather a trite remark that every one is contented \ Vith his own uii f ders ^ anding ; and Pope is rto less just than poetical when he says , " The Wise is llaj !> py , Nalture fd explore , The * fool is h » ppy , tha the knows n » more . Requesting yoiir indulgence for the length to which . this letter has been ' unavoidably extended ^ ; I remain , Sir , - "Your obedient servant , il . ALLCHIN .
