She for Independence bled , Glorious death ! and glorious prize ! Muse , patriots , muse on heroes dead , And bid a proud ambition rise . Did its neck our Albion bow ? s Still some gallant soul * retire ; And high froxn . Cambria ' s mountain brow ,
Tn lofty scorn they struck the lyre . Independence was their theine , Freedom , purest , noblest cause : Ah ! never may we lightly deem Of freedom ' s claim , of honour ' s laws ! No ! by Alfred ' s gen ' rous name ;
No ! by Edward * warrior brave ; By lofty Hampden > love of fame , And noble Sidney ' s sacred grave : By those heroes ' pains and wrongs , Who have struggl'd , fought and died , Shall Independence rule pur songs ^ Shall omy freedom be our guide . Is there who his rights betrays ?
Whom not Independen cc charms ? For him may poet wreathe no lays . Nor beauty Jiail hirn to her arcp ^ Gold and state and splendid n ^ mc , Meanly take , iiof envy we : — No : —yqur ' s be pomp and wealth and sbame , And ours all-glorious liberty .
