disappointment , and accounts for it to our renders . If theological learning consist in an extensive acquaint , ance with books , to this praise he is certainly entitled ; to any further and superior qualifications
for his undertaking , he cannot reasonably prefer a claim . We have produced examples of his imperfect knowledge of the principles on which the text of scripture is to be ascertained and its sense
explored . His expositions almost uniformly bend to some favourite hypothesis ; and the larger number of his notes relate to
conjectures and assumptions of his own , rather than to a comparison of one passage of the sacred volume with another . Yet , while he leaves the consideration of what the
records of revelation teach , for verbal disquisitions , and for investigations which are also impertinent and recondite , he has no charity

always judge of the disposition and the habits of the man from the spirit of the author ; otherwise , our estimate of Dr , Magee , in points of considerable moment , would be much to his disadvantage . His Discourses , &c . so theo « retical and so desultory , have reminded us of the remark of J . J «
