Ona contrary , wo have carefully fejltf jjloof from •** parties . Wo believed that sailr a paper was- n . ^ and resolved that all bona fide popular moveinefl among the working classes for their political ll social improvement , should have a free , f $ \] J open expression and record through our colamis if they chose to avail themselves of them . w / 0 j , j' ' higher ambition than to be useful ; and w had even reason to believe at the commencement of our undel
taking that we had a fair prospect of being so . n calculations , however , turned out to be fallacious W . cause we had not taken into account what no honejt , or honourable mind coald foresee—the co-ordinal commencement of aft active , unscrupulous , unprincipled , and calumnious system of opposition , fulseliood and detraction , with the avowedly selfish jmrpostiof destroying tho 'Star' and carrying over its readwt to another publication of which tho detractor sad slanderer was the proprietor and conductor . An « ganised and systematic . canvass was commenced al over the country , for the purpose of preventing per
sons from continuing to subscribe to , or reading tin ' Star / The moat wanton and malicious falsehood ! were first Concocted by the emissaries or dupes of the individual referred to , and then published in hit columns as faithful' expositions of public feeling , among the Chartist body . Tho snecess of this ilsj .-tardly schema was well calculated upon by its ork ginator . He had previously seen the effect npon honest and unsuspicious minds of denxmciatory rem . lotions , and bold assertions , however imtrae , and k reckoned with certainty ffpoh accomplishing bis purpose , at all events so far as the pecuniary positf-n of the * Star' was concerned .
Against such an opposition wo" were poTOU / To have met it by entering into personal controvert ,-or the detailed exposure of the falsehoods - habitually indulged in , was altogether opposed to our previous habits , and oar sense of self respect . " vVe could only fall back on an independent and consisted advo cacy of popular rights and progress as the' D ( M answer to nil these calumnies , and the best proof that the ' Star' was truly and sincerely devoted to tie service of . the people . That course has no * succeeds : } . The Trades
Societies , Working Men ' s Assoc ' hitiqrw , and Co-operative bodies , upon whose support we relied , to make up for any defection in the ultra-democratic ranks , have not thought -.-roper to give us that support . It is only one more added to numero & s- prevW illustrations of the almost incomprehensible" inconsistency of the labouring classes in this respect . Nofi' 8 J » loudly denounce the journals opposed to fhefi )' , di * more bitterly complain that tho press , as a whole ,-
systematically upholds the interests of the upper and . middle classes , and either ignores or oppresses tils ' claims of labour , than those who live by their ii ><* dustry ; yet , whenever any journal is established ex pressly for the advocacy of their interests , and throw open its columns for the exposition of their wrong . ' , they fail to give it that support which can ata enable it to do justice to their claims , or to forcethem upon the recognition of ^ bonding classes . .
The result of this active and desperate oppo * on the one hand , and of apathy on the other , h »' been a stead y and continuous loss , until at length ft became evident that no public benefit could be produced by persisting longer in continuing tlifl P lf ' under its present management . Our great opJ £ fit «' assuming the position , was to promote social trnd ?™! ' . " tical reforms in n temperate spirit—radical in princip » hut gradual in application .
