Manchester , _Mo-vday Eve . xixu . —This morning Nathaniel Curry , a spinner , in the employ of Messrs Murray , of _Ancoafe , who is in custody on suspicion of having thrown a young woman named Ann Ellison into lhe Rochdale canal , at Newton , near this town wasbroughtupatthe Salford New Bailcv for examination , belore II . L . Traflbrd , and James llayward Esqrs . ' Mr . Beswick , chief superintendent of tlie Manchester borough police , conducted thc prosecution and the prisoner was . defended by Mv . Aspinall . '
1 lie evidence was to the following effect : —On the evening of the 10 th cf December last , at about halfpast nine o ' clock , a man named Scott , who lives near the Rochdale canal , tit Newton , observed a young man and woman walking together on tl-. c towing path ot the canal , but on the other side of the water to where he vas standing . The man had his arm round her neck , and had got ono of her hands grasped within his own . After walking _tc-ethcr a snort distance , thc female called out' _« murder " but presently walked on with her companion . In a short time thev got out of sight of Scott , who again heard tlie girl call out , "Lord ! dear me ; don ' t murder mo ; do save my life .
