Murder Near Manchester. Mijfciiesrt'b, M...
MURDER NEAR MANCHESTER . MijfciiEsrt'B , Mo . _vnAr _Evb . vi . _tg . —This morning Nathaniel Curry , a spinner , in the employ of Messrs Murray , of Ancoats , who is in custody on suspicion of having thrown a young woman named Ann Ellison into the Rochdale eanal , at Newton , near this town , was brought up at the Salford New Bailey for examma tion , before ll . L . Trafford , and James Hayward , Esqrs . Mr . _Beswick , chief superintendent of the Man . Chester borough police , conducted the prosecution , and the prisoner was defended by Mr . Aspinall . The evidenco was to the following effect : —On the evening of the 10 th of December last , at about halfpast nine o clock , a man named Scottwho lives
, near the Rochdale canal , at Newton , observed a young man and woman walking together on the towing path of the canal , but on the other side of the water to where be waa standing . The man had h » arm round her nock , and had got ono of her hands grasped within kit * own . After walking together a short distance , the female called out ' murder " but presently walked on with her companion . In a ' _sbort ? ime they got out of sight of Scott , who again heard the girl call out , "Lord ! dear mo ; don't murder me ; do save my life . " This latter sentence he describes as having been ejaculated in a half-stifled voice . As he would have had to go a quarter of a mile to have reached tlie bridge which crosses tbe
canal , he appears to have troubled himself no further in the matter , but walked quietly home . In tbe course ot half an hour afterwards some young men , who were on their way homo , saw something in the canal , and upon getting a stick from the hedge succeeded in getting to the bank the dead body ofa young woman . They sent for the police , and upon searching her pockets two books were found in such a condition that it was quite clear she had only been a short time m the water . The body turned out to be that of Ann Ellison , and an inquest was held on tho body on tho following day by Mr . Rutter , the countv coroner , and a verdict of "Found drowned" turneafrom winch
. inquiries were made by Mr Beswick , tho prisoner was apprehended . The eiri was a " big piecer for him at Messrs .
