London Cokn Exchange, Monday, Dec. 22 In...
London _Cokn Exchange , Monday , Dec . 22 In the past week the arrivals of wheat of home produce for our market were moderately good , but by no means extensive .. Of English barley a large quantity came to hand , while the receipts of all other articles of grain coastwise were seasonably large . The imports of foreign and colonial wheat and flour were considerably on the increase , but those of all other descriptions of grain wcre rather small . Fresh up to-day—owing in a great measure to the late decline in the quotations here , the supplies of English wheat , coastwise aa well as by land carriage and sample , were very small , and of verv inferior quality ; hence the show of parcels of both red and white was by far more limited than we have had to report for some __ time past . This circumstance , together with the tact that most of the large dealerswho have
, lately retrained from purchasing beyond what they haverequired to meet their immediate wants , out of sliort , _stock , caused the demand for ail kinds _' of English wheat to rule firm , at an advance in the " currencies realised on this day se ' nnight of from Is to 2 s per qr , at which a good clearance was eil ' ectcd bv the factors . _Notwithstanding the large arrivals of foreign wheat , 2 _/ _. 000 qrs last week , the show of parcels ( dutv paid to-day was very small . Still , however , the safe tor that article was in a very sluggish state , the transactions being wholly of a retail nature , at last week s prices . Corn under lock was so inactive that prices ruled almost nominal . This applies equally to wheat , barley , oats , beans , and peas . The show ot English barley was large ; yet , owing to the out-of condition state in which the principal portion of it to handthe best
came , malting qualities sold somewhat freely , at full rates of currency . In grinding ant distilling sorts , next to nothing was donnr . According to the official accounts made up for the last three years up to the 5 th of November in each year , the following were the imports of foreign stock in the United Kin *; dom during those period - . —
1843 . 1 _S-U . 1845 . Considering this was the first Monday following the great- Christmas market ,
the supply ot beasts on offer this morning was good and of very superior quality , especially as relates io the Devons , Hereford ? , and shorthorns . The best qualities were in fair request at Friday's depressed currencies—the highest figures , ranging from is . 2 d . to 4 s . 4 d . per 8 _lb . ; but all other kinds wore _a'du'l inquiry , and the quotations were with difficulty supported . At the _closo of the market a total clearance was not effected . With the exception of about _&)<) beasts , divided in about equal portions from the wcatcrn _, midland , and nor thern districts , the bullock supply was chiefly the refuse of last week ' s arr ivals . The supply of sheep was again limited , but above an average quality , particularly that portion of it
derived _iromLssex , Sussex , and Norfolk . The great falling off in the numbers induced the salesmen to demand higher rates , which , however , were not submitted to by the butchers ; consequently , tlie mutton trade may be considered steady , at prices _iibouiCfliiai to those obtained on this day se ' nnight . The firs : arrival of lambs , ten in number , took place from the Isle of Wight . Their quality was good , and fait average prices were obtained for them . Prime small calves , which were scarce , moved oil' steadily at full prices ; but the value of other kinds was with _dirticulty supported .
