¦ ^ GUFt | SIZES PARJS ^ IVIay 25 . P 1 OT" AGAINST THE KINO AND GOVERNMENT . The trial of ' Hubert and otlfers was concluded f » -dayv ^ Tne ' Cooft 3 ^ number of ladies were present . On the Presiding Judge asking whether the prisoners had anything more to say in their defence , Mademoiselle Laura Gronvelle spoke ; as follows , with much , emotion and a faltering voice : — "Gentlemen ' of . the Jur ^ r-if I address you it is not to add ahythingto my defence ; I am bound to give a public testimony of my gratitude to him who has with so much feeling , ; courage , and candour come here to say what my life has been , and what my most inward thoughts are . What he has euesfied I should
not have expressed with so much felicity ; my heart is overflowing with admiration and affection . Gentlemen of the Jury , remember thatj enveloped in a fatal net , it is to Mm ; and to your " consaentipus declaration that I shall be indebted for liberty * for more than liberty—thei life of myrmother ! : Yes , Gentlemen of the Jury ^ my heart , trhich has never deceived me , tells ine beforehand that you will not separate us : you will ; restore us all to liberty , and thweveniBg , when you return to the bosom of your families , when you are surroundedbyyoiirwives and children , each of you will say , with gladness and happiness , I have restored her to her aged parent And how , Gentlemen of the Jury , allow me to comfort a conscience which , me thinks , must be disturbed . Valentin , I forgive you , Hubert f M . de YangueliB , and I forgive your mfamoua inventions against us . If ever yon be unhappy , if ever you ; fall ill , if ever all hearts shrink from you , remember that I am still
among the living , and that I am not come into the world tojudge mankind , but to assist } love , and cbnsole my fellow-creatures . " .-. ¦'' , Hubert and Steuble declared that they were satisfied with what their Counsel had urged in their -behalf , Annat added that he knew not wherefore he was in that hall . Leprong , Vincent Giraud , de Vanguelin , and Valentin also stated that they had nothing farther to adduce . At twenty minutes past one , the Jury retired , and at half-past four-they reentered with their verdict . It acquitted Leprdn" , de Vanguelin , and Valentin * and declared all the prisoners not guilty of a plot against the King's fife . Hubert was declared guilty of a plot against the Government , followed by preparations for its execution . Mademoiselle Grouvelle , Steuble , Vincent Geraud , and Annat were declared guilty of the plot only , and the Jury acknowledged extenuating circumstances in favour of the four last-named
prisoners . On the President ordering the condemned to be brought in , profound silence prevailed . Vanguelin , Valentin , and Leproux entered first , and received their acquittal and immediate restoration to freedom in mournful silence . Mdlle . Grouvelle ,- who had already learnt her condemnation , looked pale and agitated , but strove to repress her emotion . She smiled even as she hurried to her counsel , M . Favre , who received her in his arms an& clasped her . Her brother and her friend , M . Billiard , lavished every affectionate attention upon her . Hubert came next , casting a look of fury upon the Jury ; his countenance betrayed the most violent anger . He hastened to his counsel , M . Arago , and . they .. ' fell " into each other's arms and embraced . Steuble , Giraud , and Annat followed , labouring to check their emotion and indignation .
The President recommended calmness and mode-• ation while the Hussier read the Jury ' s verdict to : ho prisoners . Hubert heard his doom in sullen ilence ; but , on the condemnation of jYIdlle . Grou-. elle being uttered , tbe storm brewing within him burst forth witli tremendous fury . He drew a peninife wliich lie had concealed about his person , and ittempted to stab himself . The gendarmes rushed jpon him as we . ll as . his fellow-prisoners , and their : oiiiisd , A desperate struggle ensued . Cries of k He hns destroyed himself ! " yre * e " raised on all sides , Hubert , upon whom a hundred hands and inns had fastened , roared out to the Jury , " Canaille ! corrupt and corrupting villaiiis ! you have condemned that innocent woman—you have condemned virtue
itself ! And you dare call yourselves Frenchmen ! Abject wretches , your infamy will recoil -upon you ! Do you hear me , miscreants ! You have condemned virtue itswlf ! Would that my blood had covered you all !" The Attorney-Oanernl , appealing tp the French laws , required that Hubert be conveyed away , and that his sentence be pronounced , in bis absence . Here the tumult baffled description ; to find any thing to be compared with it in the annals of the French Criminal Courts , we ruust go back to the sanguinary lanes of 1793 . After' a desperate struggle , in . which lie had been thrown . upon his bench , foaming and vociferating , Annnt , who sat by linn , had succeeded in depriving him .-of his
nenkiute ; he hati seized upon another weapon , which had sjso-. beou wrested from him . Disarmed , his exasperation was boundless . On the guards attempting to convey him away , in com pliance with the President ' s decree , he offered the most violent resistance , fastening to his b » nch and uttering imprecations upon the jury . Mademoiselle Grouvelle nislied to him , and endeavoured ip ' soothe and mriiy Win , warning him thai lie was but ' ag gravating his situation . " Sik-nce , silence , dear Hubert " said she , " pray be calm . " "Aye , a ye * " roared he , " issue your decrees , men of despotism ; but beware , beware of the rctieil du peuple . Monsters , how have you dared to condemn that woman ? You know not what virtue is , for you have condemned virtue it < elt "
Ihe Court resembled a field of battle ; it was n'rite a general melee- The judges quaked , : the jury looked ghastly ; the counsel and other lawyers mpuriled the tables and benches ; the spectators ascended the-chairs ; the public assembled towards the lo ' -vor part of the hall escaladed the bar numbers rushed in from without , where " Aux anne . s ! ? . ux arrnes ! " re-echoed , shouts of Republican indignation , and cries of "A l ' assassin , " with hissing and the shrieks of fainting females , rendered the scene wholly indescribable . In his struggle with the guards , Hubert was some time seconded by Mdlle . Grouvelle , who convulsively clasped him in her arms ' at the same time that she strove to appease his fury , and that efforts , were made to separate her from her
fellow-prisoner . Steuble , who had also embraced him , fainted , fell , and was . carried away . The public were at length driven from the Court , amidst immense confusion . After a tumult unheard of and wlifch long defied the lungs and authority of the President and Attorney-General , some order was restored . Hubert seemed to have recovered some composure , but it was of short duration . " Oh . human justice ! " exclaimed he ; u the blood of Morey shall be avenged ! " The President ordered the guards to seize and carry him away . As they were dragging him out—" You shall not assassinate me in your dungeons , " said he ; " I shall stand your tortures ; aye , I shall not be wanting in courage !" His imprecations upon the Court continued tiU he
was beyond reach and hearing . The reading of the sentence was then resumed , after which the Attorney-General required the application of the penalties of the law . M . Favre , Mdlle . Grouvelle ' s counsel , rose and declared , that he was overwhelmed with sorrow and despair , and that he felt a sovereign contempt for the jury ' s verdict . M . Billiard swore to God that site was innocent . M . Favre entered his protest against the circumstance that the decree and Attorney-General ' s requisition had not been translated to Steuble . Counsel and the . prisoners protested against the fact of one of the jury having kept his eyes on a newspaper while M . K . vfe had made his . speech in defence of Mdlle . Grouvelle . Ihe Attorney-General resented the protest as an insult to the jury , apd the Court refused to record it . Sentence was then passed upon the prisoners : Mdlle , Grouvelle , Steuble , and Annat being condemned to five years , and Vincent Giraud to three vears of
imprisonment , and Hubert to deportation , his person to fca kept in a state prison until a place of deportation be determined tipon ^ The ' proceedines which opened on the 7 th of May , were then closed and . the guards ordered to remove the prisoners from the bar Ihe bench upon which ; they sat , labouring under the deepest emotion ^ wfcsi immediately ' surrounded . At the moment they were marched back K ™ . P nsou > th « r friends and relations rushed ^ t eir anns J - ¦" -Iwother : and twofiiends of Mdlle . Grouvelle grasped , kissedj and wept tipon her hands . A ctowd mshed to her bench , wK the other prisoners had already left , and where she sat sighing-. " Mv . mother , my poor aged mother !" Ihe guards drove back those who would , approach her . ^ At ength the Court of Assizes-recovered iS wonted silence , after an uproar such : as had iiever been witnessed within the precincts of the Palais de Justice .
