THE LANDED INTERES I , an Inquiry into the Nature of Agricultural Ttnantry , aud tht Merits and Claims of- Agricultural Tenant * to Public' "Regard and Protection ; addressed to the Landholders and to the People " of England . Bv AtTHTTE Moleebbches . LondoBj Hougbton . This ig the production of a purhlind oid Tory , ol the most rabid school ; whose spleen overflows in anger at the contemplation of any state of society different from fendalism . He would have the middle classes to be annihilated in order that the wealth tdp t ivnpn rBTroror _ - !«„„; . „ . Jnm
which they now wring from the p&or , being soil wrong from them , may be given , not to the labourer—itie . producer of all wealh , —but to those who arrogate to themselves tbe right , (!) founded on violence and rapacity , to appropriate the soil .. Its being nominally addressed , m part , to the people oj England " . is a deeeprJous % lind , for which it is not eauy to discover the purpose of assumption , a ? , in the whole book , not one line in kddressed to " the people "—the % hole being a fierce tirade against the present race of farmers , and addressed exclusively to the Ianaior 38 . ' He Tfpresents the fanners as the most immoral , ^ selfish , ignorant , booTishj arrogant and rapacious , class of men in England , ** or perhaps
even under the whole panopj of Heavtn . " Kow thongtiLr . Molekercber offers 710 proof in support of & # # .. sweeping assertions , we are inclined from personal observation to accord them some degree ot credit . "We know something of the " tenantry " in some agricultural districts , and we feel compelled to state that our observatiou confirmsin a great measure Mr . Molekereher ' s character of them . As a class , they are ignorant , brntal and rapacious . " Tbe \ form , " as'thie ; author says , " a baneful , rapacious sort of tax collectors on the labour and life of the p oor , and all thry can pxactfrom the public and the poor , after paying their rents , to the landholder , is their own . " This is necessarily the consequence of
* " Middle order" of whatever kind . JMiddlrmen of every description exist only by legalised plunder aud rapacity , continually exercised upon the labourers ; while the •» higher order" at the * ame time - subsist equally upon legalised plunder and rapacitr exereked immediately by the Aristocracy npon the farmers or " ' tenantry , " "b y the merchants , or moBeyocracy , upon the manufaetnrera and shopkeepers , and , ultimately , through them " , upon the labourers and artizans—the working population of tbe empire . Thtse are trite truth > , with which every one is now becoming well acquainted , better , we fancy , than writers of Mr . Molfckereher ' s stamp desire " that the u le 01
, peop England should be . Mr . Molekercber tells us , very truly , that the farmers su , port the-Mew Poor Law , because they find that by robbing the poor a > a \ nng is effected from the ritts , and the landlord * have not yet taken advantage of that circumstance to rai-eihe rents , bat We allowed them to poi-iti the difference ; tuax , consequently , the harpies have arasped at the appt-arance of present profit , whilr 'heir eyes were stupidly and i ^ Dorantly closed to the fact ihat the poor btr ' iQg their priucipal custom ers , the price of produce must neressarily lall in proportion to the restriction of their ability to purchase , « nd hence he leaves the unavoidable inference to be
drawn that the operation of the ISew Poor Law is alike mischievous in the long run to all classes iD society . Collaterally , he vents a very proper reprobation of some nf the more harsh modes ol "carrying out the law , " and recommends that it be amended . The chief object of Mr . Molekercher , however , evidently is to devise the means ol increasing the immediate income of the Aristocracy , and inasmuch as he perceives that this cannot be effected by any additional burdens on the poor , who are already perishing in the land , he cooll y proposes that the present race of middle men j « baH be sacrificed , and that an inferior rank of middle
men > hall be elevated outof the more fortnaateof the presentlabourers who shall be made as a compensation for the position to which they have been elevated , to pay "more fent , " and the upshot of all his declamation about the rapacry of the farmers i > a serious recommendation to landholders to " amend tbe Poor Law , lessen the size of the Rarms and raise their rents . —( Pajje 43 ) One sentiment which we fiud in the 14 tn page of this book , affords , when placed beside tbi < recommendation , a fine instance of the jargon employed by tbe venal advocates of individual interests when " they would palaver the people . Addressing the landholders he there rays— ' ,
" I say , remember yon are only tenants of the Crown , an 3 thr-Crown the tenant of tbe nationweniember yon . in rd * lity , tt ^ d the land in tr u » t fur Uke benefit of . the peuple yjHST OP *! ¦ ?¦ , and . m * xt lor yourself eg . YO 0 Rdepuue * , "Thela . riuiuji ? il '?[^; ' . " Now , this is all very fine aud looks liie a recognition of the principle that " the land of the whole country belongs to the people of the whole country ;' but bow dots this author carry out his principle ? By reComjEerjdinfr ihe aristocracy to raise their already . . phamel ' ullv exorbitant ren t * ;
So then it seems that , in the estimation of this 41 patriotic ^ ' writer " the wt-lfare of tbe country" i < best -consulted when a bloated , fatted , vicious ^ extravagant , ignorant , aiidselfish fraction of ttie people , amoxm ting not to a thousandth partin number increasttheir jiowers of ravening upon society at large . We trust , however , that the time is not far distant when " the people of England" will consult" the welfare of the nati .- > n" in- a -rery different , and , as we hope , s mo eh more effectual way . The spirit ot politicQ'Tetigious -intolerance , which pervades the book , and the mournful-dirge with which it is
introduced , about the encouragement of poperj , are perhaps thejnost harmless features of the book . There is one portion of it , wbieh , it if were likely to be circulated amongst agricultuial labourers , is admirably calculated to give zest ' and energy to the incendiary in his worthy labour of convincing the landlords that hi * malice regards not them , but only the ' * Tenantry . " This , however , is happily prevented from much opportunity of mischief by the admirable manner in which the author baa acted on h » own principle of raising rents and prices ; the price of . the book being half a crown for as much paper and print as might be well afforded for sixpence .

. Skas in the Mqo * J .-Whether there be seas in tne moon is a question which ha . -engaged the atteiinon of astronom ers , and which demands , a few remans . These , spot * , in the early observanons of the jnoon with telescopes , were generally supposed to be large colleetions ' of water 8 ia , ilar to » ur « as ; and tbe names given them by Hevelius . such ^ as Mare Crisium , Mare Imbriuu , , &c . ; S lounded jjn this opinion . The general « noot .. nes , ol tnese ob scure regions , and the consideration that water reflects le * s light than the land , induced some astronomers to draw this conclusion . These dark spots , therefore , must be considered as extensive plains diversified with gentle elevations and depressions , and consisting of substances calculated to reflect the li ^ ht ot ihe . sun with a less degree ot intensity than the other parts of the lunar surlace . These plains are of different dimensions , from 40 or 60 -to ' . 700 miles

It is a globe diversified with an immense variety of mountain seen «? ry , and at the same time abounding with plains and valleys of vast extent . But there appears to be no seas , oceans , or any large colleetiou . - ot water , though it is possible that raiall . lakes or

As we nee only one side of the moon from thw earth , we cannot tell wnat objects or arrangements may exist on its opposite hemisphere , though it is probabK ihat that hemisphere does not diifer materially in its scenery and arrangements from those which are * een en tbe side which is turned towards the earth . —Dr . INFANCY .: —If we believe the physiologists , the brain of an infant is incapable of performing man *" of its functions , and not any of those which " , in afrer life , are to be the sources of its principal t-om'ort and enjoyment . Tbe senses are only partially or imperfectly developed , but even the little sensibility it has may , by proper training , be rendered serviceable to its future good . Infants of a year old are by nature tyrants ; they see , aad to a degree comprehend , the objects by which they are surrounded , and this generates caprice—they cry for all withui
their ken , and become arbitrary before they have e . ver known submission . Unless , therefore , there is some slight restraint imposed thut early , and which may be profitably increased with the en-. arging energies , mental as well as corporeal , we shall have our ardour damped it the commencement , and our otherwise auspicious prospects of successful results at once annihilated . —Prow Dr , Rohers ' s Observations on the Management of Children —( a small but useful volume ) .

' 'Soldier , ' soid the king , ' four words with you—neither one nor t ' other !' Effbct . —Mr . Lee , the barrister , was famous for studying effect when , be pleaded . On the circuit at Norwich , a brief was Drought to him by the relatives of a woman who had been deceived into a breach of promise . of marriage . ' lee inquired ,
among other particulars , ' whether the woman was handsome ? ' ? A most beautiful face , ' was the answer . Satisfied with this , he desired she should be placed at lie barjimmedjiately in front of the jury . When he rose , he began » most pathetic and eloquent address , directing the attention of tbe jury to the charms that were placed in their view , andnainQng in glowing colours the guilt of the wretch who could injure to much-beauty . "Wien be perceived their feeling ¥ worked up to proper pitch , be sat down , under the perfect conviction that be should obtain a
verdict . What , then , must have been his surprise when the counsel retained by tie opposite party , rose and observed , 'that it was impossible not to assent to the encomiums which bis learned friend bav lavished on tie face of the plaintiff , but he had forgot tit say that she had a vmaen feg ! ' This ' fact , qf which Lee was by no means aware , was established , to his utter confusion . His eloquence was thrown away ; and the jury , who felt ashamed of the effect it had produced on them , instantly gave a verdict against him .
