' (] "We regard tie work before us , the "Silent Friend , " e as a work embracing most clear and practiciil views of a t series of comi . laints hitherto little understood , and , passed over by { he majority of the medical profession , for : what reason we are at a loss to know . We must , however , confess Uiat a perusal of this work has left such a l favourable impression on our minds , that we not only recommend , but cordially wish every one who is the victim of past folly , or suffering- from indiscretion , to profit by the advice contained in its pages . "—Age and Argus . t "The Authors of the "Silent Friend" seem to be thoroughly conversant with the treatment of a class of complaints which are , we fear ,. too prevalent in the present day . The perspicuous style in which tliis book is written , ] aud the valuable hints it conveys to those who are apprehensive of entering the marriage , state , cannot fail to recommend it to a careful perusal . London Con . v Exchange , Monday , August i ' ~\ v have still very unsettled weather , but on the whol . slight improvement lias taken place , the sIioiim which have fallen ( . luring the last few davs lm-i been of a partial . character , whilsta material rise I occurred in the temperature . The reports respect the appearance of the growing crops are stillyervcn !" Iraclictory . Tliccomplaints in regard to the wlieif plant have rather increased than diminished W , are , however , inclined to think that the rail mischief would not prove very important provided the uevf month or six weeks should bcauspicious . As yet w . have heard of no wheat being cut , but with a few really fine days a commencement would probably hi immediately , made in the earl y ' districts . A < -reafc
deal of excitement prevailed in the wheat tnuV throughout the past week , and at most of the » ' hikets held on . Friday and Saturday prices 2 s to ik " and at some places even -li per qr . above those pro ' viously realised were obtained . Whether this adyaneewill bo maintained will , in our opinion , depend in a great measure on the weather ; on the whole we are rather inclined to look tor a slight reaction . To-day at Mark-lane there was certainly much los s inclination to purchase ,, and haying a larger show ol wheat by land-carriage samples from the home counties tliau on any former occasion for several weeks past , an cil ' cctual check was given to the upward tendency . la the early part of the morning high terms were insisted on , but the millers held off altogether until factors
consented to accept : last Monday's prices , and even at the rates' then current the demand was by no means brisk , a considerable proportion ' of the supply remaining . unsold at the close of business ., Holders of free foreign wheat were not pressing sellers , ami with quite a retail inquiry very little disposition was manifested to accept , less money . For bonded parcels very high rates continued' to be asked ; there \ va 3 , however , less inclination to enter into speculative investments than at the close of the week , and comparatively few bargains were closed . Fine Dantzic was held at over 50 s and other sorts at corresponding terms . The lately established advance on Hour . was not freely paid , and the sales were on a somewhat restricted scale . There was scarcely any English barley fresh up , and though the inquiry for this grain was not particularly active a small advance on the currency ot this day se ' nnight was in partial instances realised on , superior qualities . Malt was likewise held with
nuicji firmness , and the best descriptions were hardly obtainable on as low terms as on Monday last . The fresh arrivals of oats wore moderate ; having , however , received a very good supply during , the past week ( principally from Ireland ) , " tluro was no searcity of-this grain to-day . Tlie principal dealers have latterly got pretty well into stocks , they were consequently not much inclined to buy ; having , however , a good country demand , a fair amount of business was done at prices much the same as those at which sales were made eight days ago . There were scarcely any beans of home growth offering , and foreign , whether free or in ' ¦ bond , were held at" high rates ; ' the actual sales made were therefore unimportant , but the tendency of prices were rather upwards than otherwise . The show of peas was likewise small , a parcel or two of new were exhibited of fair quality . We could not learn what prices were made for these the first arrival of the season . '
London Smith-field Cattle Market , Monday , August -I . —During the past week the imports of live stock from abroad for our markets have been on an extensive scale , they having amounted to 175 oxen and cows , together with 103 sheep and 27 calves , per the Columbine , liatavicr , and Giraffe steamers , from Rotterdam , while the Caledonia lias arrived from Hamburgh , having on board 50 oxen . To-day we had on offer SO oxen and cows , and 12 calves , from the above ports , in ¦ whi ch , however , though there were some useful animals amongst them , a decided falling off was apparent in their general quality . The demand for them was , therefore , inactive at somewhat depressed currencies , yet nearly the whole ot them'found buyers . In consequence of the
comparatively high rates ruling here , very , few shipments have been lately made to ouroutports . At . Hull only about 90 beasts have come . 'to hand since our last " ; still , we find that two cargoes comprising 75 oxen and cows have been lately landed , and disposed of by publie auction at Dundee . The oxen from Holsteiii sold at from £ 11 to £ 10 os ., those from Jutland £ t 0 to £ 13 each . The '' purchases' were wholly made by the graziers . The ' . foregoing arrivals , added to ' those previously reported , form the following totals of beasts and sheep fcr the present year . Beasts G 19 G , sheep 1813 . Fres . 1 up , _ to-day , the arrivals of beasts from our own grazing districts wore somewhat on the increase , while a further slight improvement was noticed in their quality , especially in that of those
trail the western and midland counties . Although the attendance of both town and country buyers was rather numerous , the beef trade was in a sluggish state , at a decline in the quotations obtained on Monday last of 2 d . per Sib . ; the highest figure for the best Scots not exceeding 4 si id . per Slii ; and at whiih a clearance was with diliieulty effected . From Norfolk , Suffolk , Essex , and Cambrid geshire we received about 700 Scots ,. homebreds , and shorthorns ; from the northern districts , including 80 bv railway from Newcastle-upon-Tync , 200 shorthorns , ' &c . ; from the western and midland counties , COO Hereford ' s , runts , Devons , etc . ; from other parts of England , 500 of various breeds , and from Scotland fhJO horned and polled Scots ; the remainder of the supply bcin" de-\] A bo : . j , ( j > i . ¦ & '' N < «•( £ )( v , P . °
rived from the neighbourhood of the metropolis . For the time of year , the number of sheep was very limited , and their condition was by no means good , notwithstanding the plentiful supply of fodder on the whole cf our large stock farms . " The primest old Downs were in steady request , at full rates of currency ; but all other breeds were a slow inquiry at barsly stationary prices . There were very fine store animals on offer , and for which high rates were again demanded . The supply of lambs was small , owing to which the lamb trade was active at full quotations . 1 he . foreign calves found ready buyers , at from -Is . to is . Od . per 81 b . Generally , speaking , the veal trade was steady , at last week ' s figures .
