Ancient and Modern . ' By the Rev . G . J . Davies . No . 1 . Whatever opinion may be held as to the relative merits of the sermons of the ancientsas
compared with those of the moderns , there can , be but little doubt as to the ignorance which existseven among the best-read clergyof the
works , of their predecessors . The lectures , delivered at St . James ' s , Piccadilly , several years ago , on ' Classic Preachers of the English Church /
the served pul to pit recal -work l to of men a past ' s mind age , s and the doubtless high valuo sent of some of those who heard them to search among
their shelves for long-forgotten volumes ; but , as a matter of fact , ' the mine of well-written theology which lies buried in the printed sermons of
the first ^ half of this nineteenth century' has been practically left untouched . What the author and editor of this series of little books proposes to do
is to unearth some of these old discourses , and at the same time to fill up certain gaps which he believes to exist in sermon literatureby
printing the compositions of modern preachers , for special occasions . To the present issue the editor contributes several of his own sermons ,
which show that he understands what is wanted and to secure the subjects an attentive of tho audience discourses from , twenty the laity of ,
