^ $ > e ^ oohhinbev : j > A MONTHLY JOURNAL FOR' BOOKBINDERS , BOOK-LOVERS , AND LIBRARIANS . A LTHOUGH nearly every trade and profession has its representative Journal , xjl strangely enough the art which we seek to advocate has hitherto been without any recognised organ . It is true that several of the Publishing and Stationery Circulars devote an occasional paragraph to the subject of Bookbinding , but , for all practical purposes , these are comparatively of but little value . The importance of the art of Bookbinding both historically and in connection with literature is now acknowledged , and the projectors feel assured that there is ample scope for a thoroughly practical Journal entirely devoted to the craft and to the materials used by the Binder , and to the various -tools and machinery employed in his establishment . Having carefully considered the question in its various details , and having secured the co-operation of several practical specialists , the proprietors have much pleasure in announcing that the first number of The Bookbinder will appear on July 16 next , to be continue ^ monthly . . The special features which will occupy its pages may be briefly summarised as . follows : — . 1 . A brief Histoby of the Art of Bookbinding in all Countries , from the earliest known time of its existence to the present day , illustrated with examples of the most celebrated styles . A plate printed in colours will frequently be given . 2 . Descriptive accounts of the earliest and most important r Bindings in the British Museum , South Kensington Museum , Lambeth Palace , the Bodleian , and other public Libraries , and of remarkable collections in private possession in England and on the Continent . Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of eminent , British and Foreign Bookbinders , with Illustrations of their works . Reviews of new I works in which Bookbindings are specially noticed . I 3 . Descriptive accounts of personal visits to the leading Bookbinding establishments in London , Edinburgh , and the provinces ; giving the peculiar characteristics of each house . Notices of new bindings , either in leather or cloth . Accounts of sales by auction of books from the libraries of celebrated bibliophiles of England and I the Continent , with particular notice of the works of the Masters in the art . 4 . Practical Papers by practical writers on the most important branches of th © 1 trade , especially with reference to new machines and novelties in materials ; and Practical Recipes for the manufacture of any material used in Bookbinding , when- : ever an improvement is introduced in any branch . Designs for Bookbinding , some ] new , some old , chosen with especial reference to first-class work ; with suggestions ' for the tool-cutter . Trade News of the month , practical , legal , and social , from all < quarters . Ample space will be devoted to Correspondence on every subject connected with Bookbinding . A special feature will be made of Notes and Queries relating to Bookbinding , in which the Editor will use his best endeavours to answer any question | that may be sent to him . The Bookbinder will be published on or about the 15 th of each month , at an 1 annual subscription of Four Shillings , or Five Shillings post-free , prepaid . WILLIAM CLOWES & SONS , Limited , 13 Charing Cross , London , W . C ., to whom all communications for the Editor may be addressed . " % r = — ' . ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦¦;¦ ' - ' ¦— * - ¦ ¦ ¦ , ' , \ , :, si
