It is with sincere arid deep regret that we announce the death of Dr . Woolseythe
scholarly and revered ex-President i . « of // , the University of Yale . Dr . Woolsey was born in
New York on October 1 , 1801 , and thus Jiad completed — his eighty-seventh year at the time
! and of his £ afterwards death . went He CJ If graduated to Princeton at Yale as a in student 1820 ,
of law . He returned to Yale as a tutor in 1823 , and two years later was licensed to
preach . Sixty years ago he paid a protracted visit to Europeand made himself thoroughly
French acquainted German by studies , and on Italian the ¦ spot institutions with Eng . lish In ,
1831 he , was appointed , to the chair of Greek at Yale—a position which he held with much
honour and acceptance for a term of fifteen years . In the autumn of 1846 he succeeded
Dr . Day as President of Yale , and this post of wide influence he held until 1878 when he
