Terre avant le Deluge , ' ' Le Lendemain de la Mort — / and other well-known productions have
7 A had . so great success on "both sides of the Channel .
Encouraged by the favourable reception of \ his booksM . Figuier conceived the idea of
embodying , similar conceptions in a dramatic form . The first l drama of c Le Theatre Scien 9 -
tLiique' was Les Six : Parties du Monde , in 5 acts and 10 tableauxfirst acted in Paris in
1877- This was followed , after an interval of five - — years , / , b - y ' Denis Pap , in , ou l'lnvention
de la Vapeur . ' M . Figuier ' s most recent production is said
to possess dramatic interest , which JL we can well believe — . For _ is there _ _ in fiction _ anything more
touching than the little we know of ^ the real , __ , life of the great inventor of printing : the modern
Prometjieus who jgave us that power of -the Press so , fateful for good and evil ? How
ungrudgingly and unselfishly he worked at perfecting his artwhile the shrewd calculating
man of law , Johann , JTwst , was scheming to get all the credit and the profit of the invention
for himself ; how courageously he struggled on after he has been turned out of the firm by Fust ,
and how at last he died worn-out and brokenheartedevery schoolboy ( as Macaulay would
say ) knows , , and every one connected with the trade ought to know .
M . Figuier , however , has not given us in his drama — ( and how could we expect it ?) a history
which can be taken on trust . *¦ There is said to loe much in the play about Gutenberg at
Haarlem , a sort of revival of the Laurent Coster legendwhich seems to have been
dragged into the , piece because the administrator of the Paris theatrical troupe is a
Dutchman , the author perhaps being actuated Toy the same principle as that which moved Mr .
Crummies to introduce the real pump into Nicholas Nickleby ' s play !
Yet another French book on ' John Bull and his manifold backslidings ! This time they
are chiefly political . M . L . Nemours Godre gives us a bookpublished by the house Rene
Haton , entitled , ' Les Inconsequences de John Bull , ' a lecture in several chapters JL on our want
of logic or consistency in action . The chief divisions of the work are : Knights of dynamite
the entente cordiale , and the Salvation Army , . We are told for our comfort that dynamite j
outrages have served us right for the complacency with which we have looked on when
subversive operations were being executed in foreign countries & c & c . The eleven
introductory t-J chapters are , occup > 7 ied with our attitude towards the French Republicthe German
Chancellorthe United States , and our own colonies . , ,
Algeria Most as Eng a winter lishmen resort , we may of delicate suppose persons , regard ,
or as an exercising ground for the French army . The inhabitants of the country l do not
greatly occupy our thoughts . L'Amour au Pays Bleu — ' by _ M . Hector ~ - — — _ _ .. _ France — — — — _ ia .. _ a story . __ _ . _
and a very , remarkabl ^ j e one - indeed , , of the , hopes and the --- fears ---- the - loves -..- and . the - - hates of
the Arab population , of Al geria __ . There are
m =
two editions of this book , one published lately by Messrs . Martin & Hubertof Coventry
Street , with additions , and one , published a year or two since by M . Alphonse Lemerre , of
Paris . ' La . J-iUf Baronne J » ri ^ A . \^ AAA ^ V V v dra ¦** SA . MJV ' is Aft- * the VA *^/ title % / + * of \ -r +- a volume W \ y * * 4 AA V V ^^ «
by M . The ' ophile Gautier fils , -which is published by ~ M . Calma , nn-LeVy in Paris . There are
gerol three , novelettes * La Maison in the de book Poste — , ' * and "Virginie 'La Fou Ba - - ronne Vera . ' They are nice straihtforward
storiessuitable for a railway journ g ey , which can be , left about in an English household
because without apprehension the author . of This Mademoisell is worth say e ing de ,
Maupin ' distinctly did not write for the use of boarding-schools . * La Baronne V £ ra has
already gone through several editions . M . Paul Ollendorfof Parishas published
an authorised translation , of the ' , . "Memoirs of an ex-Minister' by the Earl of Malmesbury . The
French version , 1 / does not appear to be -v at all abridgedbut by compression the whole of a
work which , occupied two octavo volumes is comprised within a few hundred cro » wn octavo
pages , offered for three or four francs . This issue of M . Ollendorf ' s has already gone
through several editions , which may be considered as a tribute to the accuracy of the
original with regard to foreign affairs , and especially those of the Second Empire .
