Valuation of Kare and Standard ^^ Books . ' By J . Herbert Slater , of the Middle Temple . A manual for which the author fairly claims some
indulwork gence , travelling on the gTound over a that wide it , range is a first , and edition we do of not a doubt but that his readers will lend him the aid
he asks towards making it more complete and accurate in future issues . As it stands , however , it needs but little apology , for it contains a vast
amount of useful information as to the formation and classification of a library , and the lists of books in the various divisions of literature are in
themselves of much value . From the Religious Tract Society . — ' Hymns for Mission Services / A collection of 160 hymns
suited for mission use , drawn from a wide variety including of sources also , Eng a lish few , of Scotch the translations , and American of ancient , and
hymns , such as Dr . Neale ' s rendering ' Jerusalem the Golden , ' which have obtained popularity in our churches and chapels of late years . The boo » k
is clearly printed in good readable type and has a stiff strong cover . From Mr . Wm . Beeves . —* Reeves ' Musical
Directory for 1883 / This annual has grown very considerably since Mr . Keeves first projected it , and it is evident that he has spared no pains to
make it complete and useful . There are , however , some rather singular inaccuracies , which ought not to have passed the eye of a careful
editor , as , for example , the statement under Westminster Abbey , where we read—Frederick Organist Bridge and Master , Mus . Doc of the , Clois Boys ters ( Superannuated , " Westminster . ) . —J .
The term ' Superannuated' was , we imagine , attached to the late Mr . Turle ' name , and is scarcely a correct description of his still young
and energetic successor , Dr . Bridge . In looking through the list of professors , we find errors which are probably due as much to the negligence of
the individuals concerned as to the editor . Thus Mr . A . J . Greenish , who ceased to be organist of Battersea Parish Church , in the Spring of 1882
and left the neighbourhood , is represented as living there . Mr . Blockley , a well-known organist and teacher , finds no place at all in the list . Miss
Monimia Twist , a professor of the piano at the Guildhall School of Music , is also non-existent as ^ far ^ ^_ w ^^ ^ as _ iTtr ^ r the ^* ^*«» ^^^ Directory m ^^^ ^» «• * r ^^ ^ r ^^ ** M ^ is " ^^ concerned ^^ *^ ^ mm ^ ^^ - ^^^ ~~^ m ^^ i " ¦¦ , « and v ^ " Mr ^ w . James - — —— - — — — - '
