men to occupy the position held by Lord Houghton in connection with English literature — ——— — . Without — personally giving to the world
^/ X . J * * any material examp ^^ le of his splendid literary attainments , he yet exerted a singularly powerful influence in the world of letters . This
circumstance has been attributed to the remarkable strength of his conversational facultiesto his aptitude and accuracy in poetical
criticism , and his wise encouragement VX of genius . , Thus no man was more intimate with the greater lights of the past generation .
Richard Monckton Milnes was born in 1809 , and was the only son of Robert Pemberton Milnesof Fryston Hall and
BawtryYorkshire . , At the age of 22 he graduated as , M . A . at Trinity College , Cambridge . In 1837 he was returned as member of parliament for
Pontefract , and continued to represent that borough until 1863 , when he was raised to the peerage as Lord Houghton . While his greatest
