Christmas Annuals &C. Several Works Appr...
CHRISTMAS ANNUALS & c . Several works appropriately coining under
this heading were crowded out of our Christmas number ; others have arrived since . These
we have pleasure in noticing in our present issue .
Beeton ' a Christmas Annual ( Ward , Lock & Co . ) contains an interesting and varied
collection of literary matter . The" principal contribution is a story of much sensational merit , entitled ' Worth His Weight in Gold' b
Annie Ashmore , , and the remaining contents , y consist of two new and original drawing-room
plays , 'To be Let burnished , * and 'A Dash for a Dowry , ' written by C . J . Hamilton and
Sir G . Campbell respectively , and ' Leaves from Lady Dorothy ' s Diary . ' The illustrations ,
by D . H . Friston and R . Andre ' , are scarcely up to the usual excellence of these well-known
artists . Messrs . Ward , sLock & Co . have also
fprwarded us their Sixpenny Christmas Annual . In this the principal story is contributed by ¦ ¦ ¦ Sir Gilbert w \^ Camp ~ m ^ bellBart b . ( ' On - ^^ - a «^ ar Winter fc 's

' A Trip to Dublin : a Drawing-room Play or Acting Charade . ' In addition we have the
surprising experiences of Dr . Ronald Hedhew Neal , as related by himself ( ' Into the Middle of Next Weekand Further' ) and a variety of
illustrations by , A . C Corbould , , the whole making up an attractive and seasonable issue .
The writers in the Christmas number of Household Words ( Charles Dickens & Evans )
are principally unknown to fame , but their work speaks for itselfand speaks in 110
unmeasured tones . The , contents are for the niO 3 t part of excellent kind , and should
compare in the very other favourabl magazin y with e special the mat numbers ter supp while lied
in point of quantity this periodical should , undoubtedly excel the majority of them . We
can promise our readers a very pleasant winter ni p ^ H ht ' s entertainment ¦ 1 i over the pages b of this

. Arnold . , George . Weatherley , and the Rev . P . B . PowerM . A . The illustrations of the
number form , a marked feature , and the printing and general finish are beyond all praise .
We may heartily commend to our readers a little work published by Messrs . Abel
Heywood c Jabez & Hod Son ges , : of a Romance Manchester of D , rabbles and entitled End . ~
Strictly speaking , we suppose , it should not be included in this columnsince it is not
precisely a Christmas volume , ; but inasmuch as it undoubtedly teaches a lesson -- df good O will ,
showing how a fine manly minister of the Gospel was the means of reforming a low , wife-beating blackguard in his parishand how
the ' blackguard' eventually exhibited , his gratitude by laying down his life for his
