iar and Practical :. an Easy Book on a Difficult Subject / by Eustace Neville Rolfe , B . A . In the preface to this guide-boolt the author says : 'I
nave endeavoured to write a work which shall be popular in the sense that it is easily understood , and practical because it shall sum up in a few
words the most important points of the various buildings which are submitted to the consideration of the reader . ' We may congratulate the
author ou having attained his object . The book is not only well planned , but is aflso well written . It consists of eleven <; hapters . The first four are
devoted to the History , Topography , Social Life , and Art of Pompeii . The nf th chapter describes the Sea Gate and Museum , the ) six £ h and seventh
contain full and interesting descriptions of the Forum , the Basilica , the Temple of Jupiter , the BathsFencing SchoolTheatresand other public
buildings , , and the eighth , comprises , an account of the Gates and Walls , while the ninth describes the remarkable Street of the Tombs .
Chapter eleven , on Literature and Industries in Pompeii , is of especial interest . In fine , this guide-book is full of information either for the
visitor to Pompeii or the stay-at-home reader who wants to know all about this city , risen , as it werefrom the deadwithout leaving his
study . , The value of the book , is much enhanced by an index and an excellent map . Messrs . Sampson LowMarston , Searle & Rivington
are the London , publishers . From Messrs . ( Him . So Oo ., 743 Broadway , New
York . —The ' Political Science Quarterly . ' The September part of this excellent and solid periodical is now before us . At least three
articles are of great interest to English readers . These are Mr . Lewis J . Huff ' s ' Ferdinand Laselle , ' an eminently judicious i and fair estimate
of a remarkable man ; England and her Colonies , ' in which the future of Greater Britain 4 State is Control treated © in f an Industry impartial in manner the Fourth ; and
-Century , ' which is specially interesting in view of late developments of Socialism .

their Therapeutics , ' by Bustonajee Naserwarijee KJvory , M . D ,. Brux . It is doubtful whether , the attempt of this author to render his work
interesting to the world at large will be particularly successful , for the secrets of the Pharmacopoeiano matter how excellently
displayed , are hardly , such as to attract the popular mind ; but as an endeavour to advance the claims of native drugsand to render their
advantages more noticeable , , the book is worthy of every praise . It is a compilation from various standard Persian , Urdu , and Sanscrit
medical works ; and , so far as we are able to judge , has been laboriously prepared and excellentl — y a — rranged — . In Bombay — it — is —— pub —™ - ¦ -

delicacies suitable for the five o ' clock tea table . The authoress has had long experience in the preparation of cookery , and her present
contribution to the subject may be recommended as thoroughly practical and trustworthy . From the same . —Mr . W . W . Fenn is hardly seen
at his best in the stories comprised under the title of 'A Professional Secret , ' and we strongly suspect that many of them represent the efforts
of earlier years . But none the less are they pleasantly readable and exciting , aad among the other forms . of popular fiction they should
undoubtedly occupy a place . The illustratipns are by H . W . Petherick . From Messrs . 'J ~ arrold & Sons " 3 Paternoster

nicely-illustrated little volume will make an excellent gift-book for the New Year . It ^ is the record of thai history of a most interesting
place . Some account is given of the habits o ± ' the illustrious inmates of its stately halls . This is an important addition to what wouldeven
