of the Moon , Movable Feasts , & c . At the first glaoce the array of information seems rather confusing , but attention to the instructions given will readily facilitate reference . From Messrs- Cornish ., Brothers , Birmingham ( London , Simpkin , Marshall & Co . ) . — ' The Last Crusade and other Poems / by Alfred Hayes , M . A . The chief poem in this volume is divided into three parts , namely ' Thfe Deatn of Saint Louis , ' ' The Burial of Saint Louis , ' and the * Storming of Nazareth . ' Mr . Hayes ' s lines are thoughtful and sincere ; they are , besides , marked by a richness of tone which is ofttimes very telling . The first poem is remarkable for some powerful versification ; the lyrical pieces which succeed are natural and tuneful . From Messrs . Hod . cl . 6 r & Stou . gh . ton . —In one convenient and comely volume Messrs . Hodder & Stoughton have produced ' The Pilgrim ' s Progress / edited , with introduction and notes , by the Rev . John Brown , B . A ., of Bedford . Mr . to Brown present intimates the book that as he Bun has ^ taken an left care it , generall retaining y his latest touches but rejecting all subsequent additions and professed emendations . The editor ' s introduction is clear as to facts , and is besides pleasantly written . From the same . —Parents and all who have to do with the upbringing of children will find much to help them in the 'Hymns for Infant Minds , ' by Ann and Jane Taylor . These hymns are too well known to call for commendation , but it is agreeable to notice the publication of a fiftieth edition , in which ten old hymns have been omitted and twenty-one added ; the latter being taken from ' Original Hymns for Sunday Schools . ' With its pretty illustration and nice binding the new edition is sure of a favourable reception . From Mr . M . L . "Hutch-inson , Melbourne . — ' Hutchinson ' s Australian Almanac , 1887 / looks very healthy in the eight and twentieth year of its life . The work gives quite a lot of information , the bulk being connected with the educational state of the colony . In the astronomical pages the matter seems to have been very carefully prepared . From Messrs . W . Kent & Co . —* The Life of Richard Baxter of Kidderminster / by John Hamilton Davies , B . A . Although this work is written in the usual style of p uch books , and in mode presents evidence of inexperience , we are 1 glad to welcome it , because it makes us once more think and read of a very remarkable man and of very remarkable times . Once when Baxter was before the notorious Judge Jeffreys and endeavoured to speak , * Richard , Richard / I roared the Judge , ' dost thou think we'll hoar , thee poison the court ? Richard , thou art an J old follow , an old knave ; thou hast written books enough to load a cart . Hadst thou been whipt out of thy writing trade forty years ago it had been happy . ' The ' writing trade ' of the author of * The Saint ' s Everlasting Rest ' has not been without its benefits to tho ' world , and the strongest admirers of our English literature have acknowledged their wonderful power . The number of his books is supposed to have reached no fewer than a hundred and twenty Much of his writing appears to have been done at odd times by snatching casual opportunities amidst his rather turbulent surroundings . Thus , * The Saint ' s Rest' was written
when he was chaplain in Colonel Whalley * s regiment . We cordially recommend a life of of Bax facts ter for , which perusal are , and to some Mr . Davies extent ' los work t throug is full h the absence of an index or list of contents . From Messrs . Crosby Lockwood SdOo . —Students and tutors of the French language will be glad of ' An Elementary French Grammar / which is based uiion the accidence of De Fivas' celebrated ' Gramqiar of French Grammars / A French Reader is appended to the work , containing selections in prose and verse ; also a French-English vocabulary of all the words used . The exercises and examples are numerous . From Messrs . JTames Macleiiose & Sons . —The Glasgow University publishers have brought out ' Homer : an Introduction to the Iliad and the Odyssey / by Professor Jebb . The purpose of * the book is announced to be the furnishing , in a compact form , a general introduction to the study of Homer . The four chapters treat of the general literary characteristics of the poems , the Hoineric World , Homer in Antiquity , and the Hoineric Question . The appendix is copious and useful , and includes an ample list of books on Homer . From Messrs . Macmillan & Co . —' Alice ' s Adventures Under Ground / This is an exquisite treasure in the shape of a facsimile of the original MS . afterwards developed into * Alice ' s Adventures in Wonderland / The author ' s illustrations are included . The profits of this new book—for it may almost be spoken of in that way—are to be given to the Children ' s Hospitals and Convalescent Homes for Sick Children . An opinion formed on the character of the volume would encourage the thought that the hospitals spoken of should benefit not a little by the revenue . From Messrs . Marshall & Co . ( 7 Leaden hall Street ) . —Each year ' s ' Shipping Diary' is largely useful ; in fact , we should say that it seems an indispensable book for shippers who wish to economise time and labour . New information is not always desirable in a work of this character unless it is to the point and useful in an economic sense . These recommendations are very evident in the ' Shipping Diary / From Messrs . James Wisbet & Co . —The Rev . Richard Newton , D . D ., author of * The Beauty of tho King /' The King ' s Highway , ' & c , offers his admirers a new book entitled ' Bible Warnings , ' being a series of addresses to children to guide them morally in tho same way as travellers are warned by signal stations . From the same . — ' W . Lindsay Alexander , D . D ., LL . D . : His Life and Work . ' Tho subject of this memoir had a reputation which spread far beyond I his local and clerical surroundings . His eloquence as a preacher for many years made his chapel a centre of attraction for all who delighted in telling forms of pulpit oratory . His worth as a kindly and pleasant gentleman will long be remembered l > y all who had the delight of his companionship . His position as a writer on divinity and other subjects is shown by the | All voluminous the story works of tho which life he of has this left great to the and world good . man is clearly , vigorously , and sympathetically told by Mr . lloss , the writer of tho memoir now before us . Friends of tho Into divine will find the volume a . mine of interesting remembrances . ' From Mr . "William Peace , Kirkwall . —Mr . Peace has sent us tho twenty-seventh issue of ' Peade ' s
