The Week.
THE WEEK .
We Are Heartily Glad To Learn That Mr. G...
We are heartily glad to learn that Mr . Glynn is now quite well . To vulgarize Solomon ' s celebrated mot about the advisability of " sparing the rod "— " Miss the Whip , ruin the Party ! "
It Has Now Been Ascertained, Without A D...
It has now been ascertained , without a doubt , that several numbers of the Spectator ( a weekly periodical ) were sold last week . We congratulate the proprietors on the joyful , and , we trust , not altogether unexpected news .
We Are Given To Understand That The " Si...
We are given to understand that the " Silent Members' * of the " House" have offered to compromise the Secret Voting Question . Although they object to the ballot , they don ' t mind going in ( when the Opera Season commences ) for the ballet /
One Day Last Week The Prince Of Wales Hu...
One day last week the Prince of Wales hunted with the Earl of Macclesfield ' s hounds , dined with Lord Sydney , and went to a dance at the Duke of Marlborough ' s in the evening . Hard work;—but Lent is a season of penance !
The Prospects Of English Opera Are Brigh...
The prospects of English opera are brightening . The Crystal Palace , after trying Blondin , Leotard , E . T . Smith , and music-hall comic singers , have given it a home . We shall hear of it at the Alhambra next . And yet foreigners declare that we are not a musical people !
We Have Reason For Believing That Mr. Ga...
We have reason for believing that Mr . Garibaldi ij > about to publish an autobiography , entitled " My Life ; or , how I sold candles , went out to fight , ran away , told lies , and humbugged the British Public . " It will probably be dedicated to the Goddess of Reason ,

It Will Please The Ratepayers Of St. Pan...
deaths in the local workhouse are as numerous as ever . Two [ paupers have been recently " removed" by ( we quote the ' words of the Coroner ' s juries ) " carelessness" and keeping a poor old man fifteen hours without food . " Richard is himself again i "
One Of Our Contemporaries Has Taken Obje...
One of our contemporaries has taken objection to the gallant Member for Southwark claiming military honours on the score that he ( the gallant Member ) is only a Colonel of Volunteers . Does our contemporary know that some of our Metropolitan Corps number as many as a hundred men armed to the teeth ? Surely not I
We Trust That Something May Come Of The ...
We trust that something may come of the convict O'Donovan Rossa ' s letter , published last week in the Times , —that is to say , sound investigation ; for if it be a truthful account of his treatment , everyone concerned ought to be pulled over the coals , and if it be not , the Times ought to be served in the same way , for lending the weight of its authority to a libel .
The Daily Telegraph Hastened To Inform I...
The Daily Telegraph hastened to inform its readers on Friday that the paragraph now going the round of the metropolitan and provincial papers concerning Court honours to Mr . Charles Dickens has no " foundation in fact . " Said our contemporary , " it is almost needless to state this . " Quite so . Everybody knows , or should know , that the popular novelist is neither a City shopkeeper nor a provincial nobody .
Mr. Odger, The Irrepressible " Working M...
Mr . Odger , the irrepressible " working man " ( who , by-thebye , does not seem to have much work to do ) , has gone to Bristol to contest the seat with two other Liberals . This amiable agitator has refused to stand the " test ballot , " although invited field lon to g before share in he it ever by the thou other ght ^ of candidates putting , in who an were appearance in the . Mr . Odger , with his abuse , and twaddle , and " perkiness , " is emphatically a bore . He should change his locale from Bristol . Let him " go to Bath , " and everyone will be satisfied !
Lord Granville Has Added Another Occupat...
Lord Granville has added another occupation to his list of duties—he has become a perambulating advertisement . The other evening he made a long speech in the House of Lords about Colonization , apparently for the sole purpose of bringing into prominent notice thej [ name of a high-priced illustrated contemporary , which is rumoured among its readers to be of the comic order of architecture . If his Lordship is not specially retained by our contemporary , he may write to the proprietors of the Tomahawk . As our terms will be Liberal , he need have no compunction in treating with us .
We Are Unable To Appreciate The Surprise...
We are unable to appreciate the surprise , though we can understand the horror , that has been expressed generally in this country at some news published last week relating to a brutal massacre of Indians by United States soldiery . Of course , the slaughter of women and children in warfare , even when carried on against beings who do not speak the English language , is an outrageous atrocity , but why should Englishmen lecture the world on the subject ? Nearly the whole of our so-called civilization in Pagan lands proceeds on the principle of exterminating the aborigines , while as regards the open brutality of slaughtering the defenceless , perhaps some one who is well acquainted with certain episodes , not in the suppression of t he Indian Mutiny , but in the course of the Punjaub War , will enlighten humanitarians through the columns of the Times .
