Art . I . Sermons by the Rev . Thomas Jervis . 8 vo . pp . 462 . Johnson and Co . 1811 . This is % we believe , one of those Volumes of Sermons , which attest the friendship which ^ commonly prevails between Disseritins Ministers and their
cong legations . It is natural that they who have for many years beef * instructed and ea * ified by a preacher ' s discourses , should be
desirous of having those compositions , which have afforded them pleasure ^ and profit , delivered to them in a permanent form ; and it is not unreasonable that the
preacher should feel a gratification in perceiving that his * labour ' has not been * in vain , ' and should yield tP the hope of Use * , fulness beyond the sphere of his
personal services , and even beyond the narrow limits of life . We confess . ; jiiat we always view these memorials of a happy pastoral connection with pleasure . There is indeed an abundance
of Sermons before the public £ but we do not think that there are more good sermons published than are -wantedY every volume goes probably into some * places wbejre

moral or devotional treatise , are allured to the perusal of a Sermon . It is notj ho \ yever , under thjs general view of the utility of published Sermons , that the volume before us , alone deserves our good opinion and will enjoy Our feebly recommendation : it has merits of
its own , which will , we harve no doubt , secure it a respectable , farik and a permanent station amongst the works which are sacred to benevolence , peace and freedom . Mr . Jervis is characterized as a
writer by richness of fancy and warmth of feeling ; his style ig always figurative and glowfng . We know not indeed that he is entitled to the pmise of originality and invention ; but if his genius be not ^ creative , it is fertile iri ' resources ; he is master of the be ^ t
