Two Letters of the Ret . S » Badcock ' s . Sir , May 6 , 181 U I hope I shall be excused for
pointing out an inaccuracy in Mr . Manning ' s account of Mr . Badcock . ( Monthly llepos . p . 202 . ) Mr . Badcock , we are told , quitted the congregation at South Moulton , in 17 $ 6 , and soon after
conformed to the church , and had a curacy within four miles of Exeter , " His health / ' it is added , 4 soon obliged him to relinquish this situation , and he afterwards engaged himself as an assistant to Dr . Gabriel , at the Octagon chapel at Bath , and had a very considerable share in writing the Bainpton Lectures , published by Mr . White- "— -Now , sir , the truth is , the Lectures in question were delivered and published in 1784 , and Mr . Badcock ' s assistance in
preparing them , was , of couise received , at least two years before lie resigned his office , as a dissenting minister . It is desirable to be correct in these dates ; because they seem materially to affect the judgment that we form on one of tlfe most curious
occurrences in literary history . The celebrity which the Bampton Lectures , of 1784 , obtained as soon as they were published , could not but be very flattering to Mr . Bad - cock ' s predominant passion ; nor is it improbable that his
connection with the learned profitssor had its influence in leading to his subsequent conformity . Those , however ^ who are acquainted with the ground of Mr . Badcock ' s removal from
Barnstable , ( in 1778 , ) will feel no difficulty in accounting for his declaration . ( Sep . 27 , 17 & 6 . ) iC I kave xesigued xny function **

dissenting minister . It was long long , a most grievous oppression . 1 have boldly shook it off */' The following letterst , written in Mr . Badcock ' best ma nner will , 1 doubt not , be acceptable to many of your readers . They strikingly exhibit the workings of remorse , and convey a most awful and instructive lesson .
1 am , Sir , respectfully yours , Y . " Friday , Jan . 1781 . " Dear Sih , I Writ to you last under a very heavy oppression of spirit . Since that time , roy distress for a friend hath been aggravated by anxiety
of a personal nature . I have been alarmed by a disorder in my eyes , which hath totally hindered me from pursuing a most important plan of study ; and my slight is still so weak and precarious , that I know not when f shall have the
ability or the fortitude to resume my books . I can read and write but little at a time ; indeed I seldom read or write at all . Think of my situation at ! Indeed ,
indeed , it is almost insupportable at times . Oh ! the pains and penalties of idleness ! and ho \? aggravated to the man who wishes to be employed ! While you art enjoying the delights of social life with your friends abroad , the more endearing and delicious joyi
of domestic life , think of a poor forlorn creature , who is doomed to drag out a miserable winter in the desart ! I speak more in earnest than in jest . My apprehensions have been terrible ; on Ci h orror ' s head ^ horrors have accumulated /
